Posted in No category

It seems that Sametime team thinks in the same direction as me or they read some suggestions somewhere because I was putting it for quite a while in different places.

IBM Connections will get Sametime Advanced chat rooms and Sametime Meetings meeting rooms available for Connections communities plus integration with Connections files. Already now in IBM SmartCloud for Social Business they made possible to access Connections files in Sametime meeting room library. These are integration features that I was mentioning for years and now it is coming, this is really great.

They are making available MCU in Sametime, some devices will be connecting to Sametime natively so I am wondering if IBM opens SIP with audio and video from Sametime to the outside world.

Mobile a/v features are of course awaited for a long time, these are expected to come too.

One thing that I missed during this session is dates of a roadmap. So roadmap is there without any suggestion about versions and availability dates. I hope this will be somehow made available to IBM partners and customers can plan upgrades and sell better.

We were expecting it this year but it was shifted, hopefully for good, considering the number of small and not so small issues we find every day in the public beta.

But still we would like to know when we would get the new Social Edition to be deployed on our production servers. Well, today it seems that we can be quite sure on the planned release date.

As per announced marketing withdrawal for XWorks server 8.5.3 per 14/03/2013, this product will not be sold after this date. Ed Brill has posted an explanation for horrified XWorks users that it means that 8.5.3 will be stopped and replaced with the new version, which is, apparently, “something after 8″. So it will be Domino 9 and XWorks 9 by 15/03/2013 as everything shows us so far.

Well, looking forward to that, I hope my personal influence on that relase would add up some to its quality

Under the hood, Lotus Symphony is based on OpenOffice.org 3.0, a slightly earlier version of the same office-suite code that powers LibreOffice. What you see on screen, however, is an interface that's been tweaked by IBM to make it by far the user-friendliest no-cost productivity suite, and one's that's friendly enough to rival the spacious and informative interface that Microsoft created for Office 2010 and that Apple created for iWork '09. I'm deeply impressed by Lotus Symphony. IBM obviously built it so beginners and office workers can get the most out of it without special training. Expert users who need to open files in a wide range of formats, including Microsoft Works, Corel WordPerfect, or Lotus WordPro, will prefer LibreOffice, because Lotus Symphony only imports Microsoft Office and OpenOffice.org documents—but that's all that almost every office environment ever needs. ~ Edward Mendelson

Skype for Asterisk was an anomaly. The Asterisk PBX could actually dial SkypeNames and see presence/status into one of the world’s most closed networks. Killing Skype for Asterisk could only make sense to Skype. Skype Connect became the revised strategy, sell access to the network via VoIP’s lowest common denominator known as SIP. This is a more mainstream and efficient solution for interconnection, but reduces the value to basic voice. Skype rides the popularity of SIP trunking and positions its robust network as a dumb and cheap pipe for the PBX. Skype for Asterisk was probably viewed as a hinderance to Skype Connect’s success.

The top of this article is about Symphony! Cool, nice to see it reviewed.

One thing I want to point on is this citation:

Don’t let the name fool you. IBM’s Lotus Symphony suite has almost nothing to do with the earlier incarnations of the Lotus Symphony suite — it’s now a rebranded spin-off of OpenOffice.org, with a heavily reworked interface courtesy of IBM’s programmers. It also features only three applications from the OpenOffice.org suite, but they’re the ones that matter: word processor, spreadsheet, and presentations.

Might be this is a sign of using the wrong name (should I also say “again”?) for a new product…

OpenOffice.org, LibreOffice, IBM Lotus Symphony, SoftMaker Office, Corel WordPerfect, and Google Docs challenge the Microsoft juggernaut

Here is the full article:

As part of the Sping release, IBM has added integration with yet another third-party application, Teampoint.

Heres what Teampoint does:

TeamPoint makes the management of your policies and procedures easier than ever. TeamPoint tracks and manages the creation of your controlled documents, helping you remain compliant with employment law, health and safety regulations and standards such as ISO 9001.

TeamPoint also allows you to capture an employee’s acceptance of key policies and procedures and automatically provides a “Starter Pack” for new employees based on their location in your organization. Integrated with LotusLive collaboration tools, now you can share your documents through LotusLive while still controlling versions and access through TeamPoint.

This application works with LotusLive Engage and Connections and requires a subscription of TeamPoint.

This video explains this well:
